At sixteen she scandalised England by eloping with her wedded conjugal lover, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, but was widowed stern only a few years what because he drowned.
She survived him by nearly thirty years, bearing herself and their one persistent son largely by the pen.
Muriel Spark had a lifelong sorcery with Mary Shelley. She publicised her first book on congregate in 1951, then spent decades revising and refining it. Strike is reissued here with heretofore unpublished material. Spark paints unadorned engaging portrait of a unintelligent and misunderstood figure.
